How To Have A Wedding In Norway

If you are one of the growing number of couples who want to legally marry in Norway, then you should start here at the Norwegian tax office where you can apply for the ‘certificate of no impediment to enter into marriage’.

If you’re foreign citizens that:

• have a permanent residence permit in Norway or

• have refugee status and have been granted asylum in Norway

• are EEA citizens with a permanent residence certificate according to the Immigration Act

• are Nordic citizens

then the procedure is the same as when two Norwegian citizens marry.

If one or both of you are not the above, then you can still legally get married in Norway. You just have to apply for the ‘certificate of no impediment to enter into marriage’ before hand. It takes about 6 weeks to process an application so submit your paperwork in good time.

To make things simpler, many couples prefer to do the legal marriage in their home country first, then they are free to have a celebrant ceremony anywhere in Norway that they like.
